Philosophy and Literature

This degree enables you to study the interactions of philosophy and literature; modules allow students to reflect on questions concerning knowledge, imagination, narrative, self, aesthetic value and judgement, and the ethical and political role of literature.

Entry requirements

Predicted (or actual) 2.1 degree in philosophy and either English literature or a classical or modern language; English language requirements: IELTS 7.0, TOEFL (iBT) 100, PTE 70, CAE 60+ or CPE.

Course modules

Core modules include: Tragedy (joint module taught in the philosophy department); Derrida and literature (joint module taught in the French department); revolutionary aesthetics: Benjamin, Lukacs, Brecht, Adorno (taught in the German department); philosophy optional modules typically include: Kant; Hegel; Nietzsche; hermeneutics; problems of modernity; phenomenology; aesthetics; options available via the English department typically include: modernism and mythopoeia-Lawrence, Joyce and Yeats; poetics of urban modernism; feminist literary theory; problems and modes in postcolonial literature; psychoanalysis and literary criticism; students may replace 1 module by a longer dissertation of 15,000 words; specialist language courses for philosophers are offered in Ancient Greek, French and German, as well as an induction course for Master's students.

Assessment methods

Assessment is by 1 5,000-word essay per module (with the opportunity to replace 2 modules by a 10000-word essay) plus a 10,000-word dissertation.
