Advanced Music Technology

This course aims to provide students with a higher level of understanding of the practice and theory that underpin both traditional and contemporary audio technology; the course focuses on the creative use of advanced audio technology in the production of contemporary audio, with emphasis on the practical exploration of technique and technology; it assumes a prior level of competence in recording and sequencing technologies; students work on digital and analogue consoles with access to 5.1 surround and ProTools HD 3 systems, in addition to other non-linear platforms and both digital and 2-inch analogue tape systems; the course ranges across recording styles, from direct to stereo and ambient recording through non-linear techniques, to the evolving arena of surround sound mixing and recording, encompassing multi-media and film work (including DVD authoring); the course also examines software interface programming through Max/MSP, and its use within electro-acoustic composition and performance, alongside a choice from a number of options drawn from other (related) Master's courses.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree or higher in music technology or a related subject, or substantial industry or prior experience in the field; applicants whose 1st language is not English require either IELTS 6.5 or above with a minimum of 5.5 for each individual component.

Assessment by written and practical assignments.
