Composition (Electronic Music)

This course is aimed equally at composers of electronic music in the traditional sense, and contemporary artists who may combine the role of composer with producer, engineer, musician and DJ; the course encompasses a broad range of electronic music, from popular electronic dance music styles to art forms such as electroacoustic music; it assumes a prior level of competence in composition and/or music sequencing and production; composition studies include 1-to-1 tutorials in an area of electronic music to be negotiated between student and lecturer; students also examine the history and important concepts in electronic music, the creation of sound installations and live performances and options that can include the theory and practice of sequencing, sound synthesis, sampling, production techniques and the use of Max/MSP.

Entry requirements

A 2.1 Honours degree or higher in music, music technology or a related subject; or substantial industry or prior experience in the field; portfolio; applicants are required to provide a portfolio of degree level / professional work and a written statement; applicants whose 1st language is not English require either IELTS 6.5 or above including a minimum 5.5 for each of the 4 individual components, TOEFL internet-based test 90 or above, Pearson PTE Academic 58 or above, or an equivalent secure English language test.

Course modules

Modules include: electronic music composition 1; developing your career; electronic music composition 2; interactive music technology; research methods; dissertation or project. Or: practical composition 1; practical composition 2; orchestration and arranging; conducting. Optional modules: digital audio interface design; the development of audio technology; advanced non-linear recording; mixing and recording multi-track for surround; manipulating sounds; combining sounds; multi-track recording and mixing for surround; stylistic composition (pre 1900); stylistic composition (post 1900).
