The programme is designed to build on students' existing strengths and to bring them to the leading edge of knowledge in their chosen area of research.

Entry requirements

The minimum entry requirement is a 1st degree 1st Class, 2.1 or equivalent qualification in a relevant field, plus MA/MSc qualifications, or relevant postgraduate or research experience. Candidates with other qualifications are required to discuss their eligibility with a member of staff. International students need to meet our English language requirement at either IELTS at 7 or above.

Assessment methods

Assessment for students who wish to gain PhD status; the student is expected to submit: a revised research design and plan, an account of preliminary data collected and any preliminary data analyses, 2 or 3 draft chapters, and a detailed plan describing how the dissertation is to be completed from that stage. The final PhD oral examination normally takes place 3 to 6 years after the initial acceptance, depending on the mode of study.
