The courses differ slightly in that research at the MPhil level represents an extension of existing knowledge, while at the PhD level you will be expected to make an original contribution to knowledge; most students enrol first for the MPhil and transfer to the PhD when their work has sufficiently developed; however, it is possible to enrol directly onto the PhD course if students are appropriately qualified; some students without previous research experience may enrol on the MPhil and complete a diploma in applied research methodologies during their first year of study.
An Honours degree (1st class or 2:1) in the student's chosen subject area; applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 7.0 or above, TOEFL paper-based test 600 or above, TOEFL computer-based test at 250 or above, or TOEFL internet-based test 100 or above.
