University of Westminster
Multimedia Journalism (Print and Online)
You will still be able to specialise in a particular medium on the course, but you will also develop a wider range of skills, allowing you to be familiarised with the way that journalists work across different platforms. This is vital for people starting out in the profession. Whether you have already begun your career in journalism, or you are starting it, this course will equip you with the practical and intellectual skills necessary to succeed in print, online media, multi-platform or broadcast journalism. The course has a strong practical focus, and our teaching staff are highly experienced journalism professionals. You are expected to develop story ideas and contacts, and gather your own material for journalistic course work, finding stories which could be local, national or international. There is full training in using our up-to-date media resources: software, cameras and recorders, newsrooms and studios. Students will regularly contribute to our journalism student news-site Westminster News Online throughout the course. Regular classes are taught by the experienced journalists on our staff, and we also invite other media professionals as guest speakers or to critique student work. You will have the chance to undertake a work placement, which we can help you to find through industry contacts. In recent years, through one of our unique contacts, some post-graduate journalism students have been able to serve as "embedded journalists" on Royal Navy and NATO training exercises, sometimes even reporting from on board ship. There's also the chance to air your work on Smoke Radio, the University's multi-award-winning internet radio and TV station.
