Transport Planning and Management

This course develops students' ability to initiate and implement advanced analysis and research in transport policy, planning and management; students learn the techniques and methodologies they need to take decisions, or to provide the necessary information for others to take policy decisions; succesful completion gives full exemption from the examination requirements for Membership of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (MCILT ), and also forms part of the pathway to the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) qualification; for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma students take modules totalling 120 credits from the MSC module list which must include all the core modules except the dissertation; for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate students take the modules comparative transport policy; transport economics and 1 other 20 credit module from the MSC module list.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree (2.2 or above) in a relevant subject area, and any relevant transport experience would further enhance an application. Part-time students should be currently employed within a relevant sector of transport for the duration of the course, and should normally have been employed for at least 1 year before starting the course. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5.

Course modules

Core modules: comparative transport policy; research dissertation; statistics and survey methods for transport; transport economics. Optional modules: airline planning and management; airport planning and management; freight transport and logistics services; land use and transport; public passenger transport; traffic in urban areas.

Assessment methods

These include coursework, examinations and a dissertation.

Sponsorship information

Small number of EPSRC Advanced Course studentships available; in addition, students may be eligible for bursaries offered by Rees Jeffreys Road Fund; some fees-only bursaries may also be offered by Transport Studies Group. On application, students should state whether they wish to be considered for studentships.
