Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
This course explores developments in teaching English as a second language (TESOL). As part of the programme students study the description and analysis of language and language learning, with specific reference to English language teaching and second language acquisition, current practice and developments, including communicative competence in language learning and teaching, language teaching methodology, and discrete and integrated skills.
A good Honours degree or equivalent. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 with 6 in each component.
Core modules: current developments in language teaching; dissertation; language and learning: description and analysis. Option modules: inter-cultural communication; educational management in tesol; english language teaching methodology: theory and practice;languages for specific purposes; materials development; media and technology; sociolinguistics; testing and assessment; translation studies; written discourse analysis.
Assessment methods include essays, reports and a dissertation.
