Normally a 1st or 2nd Class Honours degree or a professional qualification such as Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Students take optional modules which enable them to identify and develop an aspect of their professional work with a tutor's support. The modules are flexible, allowing for shorter submissions of 4,000 words through to longer submissions of 8,000 words. Introductory modules: critical thinking and writing at Master's level; introduction to researching in education; reflecting on professional practice; considering debates in professional practice; exploring aspects of pedagogy; sharing professional practice. Further optional modules: Examining professional practice; investigating practice through a project; individual practitioner enquiry; developing pedagogy and learning. The above are 'shell' modules which may be taken as the assessment pathway in any taught or supported CPD course. Research methods modules: Quantitative methods in social research; qualitative methods in social research. Students must take a minimum of 20 credits of research methods in preparation for the Independent Study (Dissertation). Students choose which to do and can do up to 60 credits.
Assessments take the form of reflective journals, portfolios, case studies or workplace-based assignments.
