University of Wolverhampton
This course offers students the opportunity to address the developing areas of biomedical science common to all associated disciplines, including recent advances in genetics and immunology, and to equip students with the research skills necessary to complement their clinical laboratory responsibilities. The Professional Doctorate course combines analytical appraisal of continuing practice with a major research project, which may be undertaken in the workplace laboratory, or with 1 of the active Biomedical Science research groups in the Research Institute in Healthcare Science. Part-time students study core (and most optional) modules on 1 full day of the week, minimising the time away from work.
DBMS: Students are required to hold an MSc Biomedical Science or MSc in a specific Biomedical Science discipline plus have adequate depth of professional experience (normally around 5 years) as a laboratory scientist. Suitable professional qualifications (e.g. Fellowship of the IBMS) may be accepted for entry. Credits obtained from suitable study at Master's level are credited towards the doctoral programme by the School of Applied Sciences APA Committee.
Modules include: clinical immunology; gene technology; laboratory medicine. Specialist module (from cellular pathology; clinical biochemistry; haematology or medical microbiology): management in biomedical science; research methods in biomedical science; biomedical science research project.
