This specialist programme trains students in traditional areas of environmental management, such as environmental audit, environmental management systems, impact assessment, environmental planning and stakeholder participation. It also investigates contemporary topics in environmental management, including urban sustainability, carbon management, climate change adaptation and GIS/remote sensing. The course has a strong emphasis on the international nature of environmental issues, the natural and the built environment, sustainable development as a contemporary policy objective and the importance of considering the context within which environmental management occurs.
A science or social science degree with a minimum 2nd Class Honours. Candidates without these qualifications, but with substantial relevant work experience, may be considered for entry by assessing levels of professional experience and skills. For students whose 1st language is not English, a standard of written and spoken English equivalent to IELTS 6.0 is required. Candidates must achieve an IELTS minimum score of 6 in the written test as well as in the overall assessment.
Studied modules may include: Environmental assessment, including environmental impact assessment; environmental management systems; urban sustainability; climate change management; GIS and remote sensing; professional communication skills, including a dissertation; environmental research methods; research project. Students are given the opportunity to undertake a work placement as part of their degree.
