Mental Health

This course is designed to enable you to meet the challenges of vulnerable people with mental health needs in primary care settings. The course offers a flexible approach that allows you to study at a pace that suits your work demands and you can choose to study a discrete module or take modules leading to Certificate, Diploma or Master's Awards. This part time multi disciplinary programme provides an opportunity to develop advanced working knowledge and skills, necessary to offer high quality evidenced based interventions for patients with a range of mental health needs and conditions. You will contribute to service developments which promote socially inclusive mental health care for individuals, families and communities.

Entry requirements

1st degree or equivalent; if English is not the applicants first language a TOEFL score of 550 or above, or an IELTS score of 7.0 or above, or evidence of equivalent English proficiency; a professional qualification such as GPs, community nurses, therapists, psychotherapists or counsellors; employed in area of health or social care sector with the opportunity to work with people with mental health difficulties; accreditation of prior learning (APL) (students may apply for up to 80 credits of APL (accreditation of prior learning) subject to the guidelines set out in the SHaW APL Guidelines).

Course modules

Modules include: mental health (assessment and diagnostics); common mental health disorders; enduring mental illness; contemporary therapies in mental health practice; emerging mental health agendas; mental health, families and children; ageing and mental health.
