This course is designed to allow students to 'top up' their existing Post-graduate Diploma qualification (or equivalent) in any health, welfare or social care related subject to a full master's qualification. Students complete their Master's level education in the concepts, theories and academic skills of relevance to their work arena or chosen career path. The course caters for both students who are currently working in the health, welfare or social care fields and for students who are not currently working in these fields but hope to enhance their post-graduate skills and knowledge in order to take up such employment. The course offers a flexible approach to the topic chosen for their independent study, fosters independence and responsibility in taking control of their own learning and professional development needs, and builds on their existing knowledge and experience.

Entry requirements

The minimum academic entry requirement is 120 level 7 credits or a completed Post-graduate Diploma at level 7 (Master's level) in any health, welfare or social care related discipline. Diploma must have been fully completed and agreed by an examination board before starting this course. Candidates may also need to attend an interview and to give a 10 minute presentation on their academic progress to date and their ideas for a Master's level independent research project. Candidates may need to take a research methods module to prepare them for their MSc/MA top up course and before applying for this course. If English is not the 1st language, they need to have a TOEFL score of 550 or above, or an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, or evidence of English proficiency equivalent to these scores.

Course modules

1 Optional modules: research dissertation; evidence-based practice module containing 2 summative assessments; consultancy report, usually of relevance to the student's current workplace.
