The course structure recognises that many teaching skills are common to all science specialisms and often trainees work in mixed specialist groups; this has been found to be popular with students because it helps develop an awareness of how common concepts (such as energy, particle theory) are taught and used across school science; allows for peer support and mentoring for topics outside a trainee's specialism, and of course encourages wider social contact; focuses on knowledge and skills required of a specialist subject teacher provides knowledge about national curriculum; curriculum materials and approaches to teaching develops ability to use information communication technology (ICT) in the classroom; planning and assessing learning; students have the opportunity to take a a special needs pathway, a citizenship pathway for a small number of students, and a 14-19 physical education pathway.
A good Honours degree or equivalent status with usually 50 per cent of the degree or professional qualification applicable to subject choice; grade C in GCSE or equivalent in English and mathematics; GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications should have been obtained at the time of application; applicants should have some work experience in a primary school setting before application and are required to show at interview that they have the required level of subject knowledge in their chosen subject; this may be through their degree, other advanced studies, or experience in the workplace; applicants from non-traditional routes, mature applicants and those wishing to change career are considered; all successful applicants must demonstrate that they have spent some time gaining experience within a school setting and have an awareness of current educational issues; short-listed applicants are interviewed; the Teacher's Agency (TA) requires all trainee teachers to satisfactorily complete a medical questionnaire and obtain a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced disclosure.
Students are assessed on the basis of their course work including written assignment; a professional development portfolio and an oral presentation of a small research project; as well as on their teaching practice; the government also insists that students pass computerised tests in literacy; numeracy and information communication technology (ICT) before they can be awarded a qualified teaching certificate (QTS).
