Primary Education (Early Years 3-7)
Students are equipped to meet the National Standards for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) upon successful completion of the course and all students register for 60 credits at Master's level and thereby achieve the PGCE; this course includes a significant professional pedagogy and management element which covers the role of the professional teacher, the child as learner and wider issues associated with school and society, in particular the Every Child Matters agenda; students develop an advanced understanding of child development and classroom relationships, as well as the skills in classroom organisation, management, assessment, recording and reporting that are essential to effective teaching; throughout the course there is an emphasis on inclusive education, with particular reference to managing behaviour and special needs; students also have the opportunity to further their knowledge, understanding and skills in an area of primary education through a Master's level extended study from a chosen option range of curriculum areas.
A good Honours degree or equivalent status with usually 50 per cent of the degree or professional qualification applicable to subject choice; grade C in GCSE or equivalent in English and mathematics; GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications should have been obtained at the time of application; applicants should have some work experience in a primary school setting before application and are required to show at interview that they have the required level of subject knowledge in their chosen subject; this may be through their degree, other advanced studies, or experience in the workplace; applicants from non-traditional routes, mature applicants and those wishing to change career are considered; all successful applicants must demonstrate that they have spent some time gaining experience within a school setting and have an awareness of current educational issues; short-listed applicants are interviewed; the TA (Teacher's Agency) requires all trainee teachers to satisfactorily complete a medical questionnaire and obtain a Criminal Records Bureau enhanced disclosure.
Core subject modules: preparation to teach English, mathematics and science especially in the case of Advanced Early Years students, in nursery and reception classes; foundation subjects and religious education are also covered; school experience is a substantial and integral part of the course from the 1st term, through both serial and block practice, with further experience in terms 2 and 3; in total, of the 38 weeks of the course, 18 are spent in schools; there are opportunities to undertake placements in a SEN school or as part of a modern languages overseas placement programme; trainees undertaking a modern languages pathway are expected to participate in the overseas programme; extended subjects offered include all the National Curriculum subjects as well as languages, information communication technology (ICT), religious education, special educational needs (SEN); advanced early years and outdoor learning; candidates apply for the course selecting which of these they would like to develop as their extended subjects, based on their qualifications and experience; from time to time there are opportunities for other specialised placements in schools.
Students are involved in assessing their teaching skills and competence as they develop through the use of a professional development profile to which students, teachers and tutors contribute; at the end of the course students are advised about their 1st year in teaching through the career entry and development profile, as part of their continuing professional development.
