Secondary Education (Computer Science)

The course provides you with a chance to inspire the next generation of technology leaders, innovators and programmers. You will be trained to teach the concepts of computational thinking. The course consists of university based sessions (which make up approximately a 1/3 of the time) and teaching practice in 2 partner schools. While on teaching practice you will be supported by an experienced ICT/computing mentor. You will be trained to teach computer science to pupils in the 11�16 or 11�18 age range, depending upon your level of subject knowledge and your own preference. This will be discussed at interview.

Entry requirements

A good Honours degree or equivalent status with usually 50 per cent of the degree or professional qualification applicable to subject choice; grade C in GCSE or equivalent in English and mathematics; GCSE (or equivalent) qualifications should have been obtained at the time of application; applicants should have some work experience in a primary school setting before application and are required to show at interview that they have the required level of subject knowledge in their chosen subject; this may be through their degree, other advanced studies, or experience in the workplace; applicants from non-traditional routes, mature applicants and those wishing to change career are considered; all successful applicants must demonstrate that they have spent some time gaining experience within a school setting and have an awareness of current educational issues; short-listed applicants are interviewed; the Teacher's Agency (TA) requires all trainee teachers to satisfactorily complete a medical questionnaire and obtain a Criminal Records Bureau Enhanced disclosure.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed on the basis of coursework including 3 written assignments, a portfolio and an oral presentation of a small research project, as well as on your teaching practice. To gain qualified teacher status (QTS) you must demonstrate that you can meet the Teachers� Standards.
