Sports Management

The aim of the course is to provide professional preparation for management or leadership positions in a variety of sport recreation and health promotion areas; it is aimed at professionals working in sports organisations in sport management who want to expand their management skills and knowledge to improve their career prospects; it is also aimed at graduates aspiring to work in sports business or management by gaining a Masters award that develops knowledge specific to the sector and through developing appropriate skills in a sport management context; it encompasses the study of key management disciplines: economics; financial management through an enterprise module; marketing; human resource management; and research methods; the professional placement enables the student to demonstrate their professional sports management competencies through continuing professional development activities; the advanced independent study module provides opportunities for students to negotiate a suitable project that meets the intended learning outcomes of the module in their area of sports management interest.

Entry requirements

Good 2nd class Honours degree (or equivalent) in a related discipline; those with appropriate professional experience may claim for exemption of up to 50 per cent of the taught elements through accreditation of prior (experiential) learning determined at interview.

Course modules

Sports marketing and the environment; entrepreneurship in sport; dissertation; professional practice; leading and managing people in sport; research methods.

Assessment methods

Written assignments; data handling assignments; case study; oral presentation and defence; integrative curriculum project; portfolio; business plan; group presentation; dissertation.
