The MA in Field Archaeology offers a perfect blend of theory and practice, equipping you with wide-ranging, advanced practical skills, while giving you a deep theoretical knowledge and understanding of the logistical challenges, legal requirements and ethics involved in archaeological fieldwork. It is a flexible course, devised to meet demand for professional training in the UK and worldwide. It will give you a thorough knowledge of how, and why, archaeological fieldwork has arrived at its current state and acquaint you with the key methods employed in modern fieldwork, analysis and dissemination. It will enable you to think strategically about project design and tactically about project implementation.
A good Honours degree (upper 2nd or 1st class) or an equivalent qualification from an overseas institution in archaeology or a related subject. Mature students or those with less conventional qualifications but with relevant professional experience in this field will be considered.
Compulsory modules: Context and practice of gathering field archaeology data; analysis, interpretation and dissemination of field archaeology data; Dissertation. 2 optional modules: Digital publication and we technologies; the archaeology of human bones; cultural heritage management 1 - concepts principles and practice; analysing historic buildings; analysis and visualisation; zooarchaeology in context. Plus 4 shorter optional 'skills' modules.
A range of scholarships and studentships are available at postgraduate level. Some scholarships are funded by the university (such as the York Masters Opportunity Scholarship) and some are funded by Research Councils, alumni, businesses and charities. Please check with the provider for details.
