History of Art

The History of Art department is one of the world's foremost departments for postgraduate study and research, with wide-ranging and internationally renowned expertise in western art and architecture from the early medieval to the contemporary periods. Our postgraduate students, who join us from across the UK and around the world, come from a diverse range of academic backgrounds.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a good 2.1 or 1st class undergraduate degree, or equivalent; applicants for the PhD should also have or be currently completing an MA degree, and we normally require an MA dissertation mark, where one is awarded, of at least 65 or equivalent (where 50 is a bare pass and 70 or above is a distinction). If you're a non-native English speaking applicant you must provide evidence of your English language ability. You need to show enough fluency in all aspects of English (reading, writing, speaking and listening) to the required level of the course you're applying to.

Sponsorship information

A range of scholarships and studentships are available at postgraduate level. Some scholarships are funded by the University (such as the York Master's Opportunity Scholarship) and some are funded by Research Councils, alumni, businesses and charities. Please check with the provider for details.
