University of York
Candidates will specialise in a relatively narrow subject area and conduct novel research to advance our knowledge of that area, meaning that by the end of your degree you are an expert in your topic. Whilst you will acquire in-depth knowledge and a specialised skill set through conducting exciting research projects alongside your supervisors, you will also receive broader training in research skills and psychological knowledge, that are widely applicable to both academic and non academic settings. Areas of research are: Cognition and communication; developmental psychology; social interaction and forensic psychology; perception and action; neuroscience methods and theory.
Applicants require a UK 2.1 or international equivalent in a relevant subject.
PhD and MPhil degrees both involve conducting research under the supervision of a member of staff and submitting the results in a thesis. Applicants are expected to choose between our two PhD programmes based on their research interests: those who plan to conduct research at the York Neuroimaging Centre, or to complete research in cognitive neuroscience are advised to apply for the PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging, whilst those with research interests in all other areas are advised to apply for the PhD in Psychology.
Each research student has a supervisor who provides advice on a day-to-day basis. In addition, students meet with their Thesis Advisory Panel once a term to review their progress and present their plans for the next term.
A range of scholarships and studentships are available at postgraduate level. Some scholarships are funded by the University (such as the York Master's Opportunity Scholarship) and some are funded by Research Councils, alumni, businesses and charities. Please check with the provider for details.
