Economics and Public Policy

This programme is designed for those working in the public sector, public administration, government departments, the NHS, international agencies and elsewhere who wish to upgrade their existing skills; those who want to build on their existing degrees in economics by obtaining further knowledge and expertise in more specialised areas; Those with a background in disciplines such as government, sociology, mathematics or natural sciences, but without a strong background in economics.

Entry requirements

Minimum entry criterion is the equivalent of an upper 2nd Class degree primarily in economics from a UK university. If you are a non-native English speaking applicant you must provide evidence of your English language ability. You need to show enough fluency in all aspects of English (reading, writing, speaking and listening) to the required level of the course you are applying to.

Course modules

Core modules: Applied microeconomics 1 and 2 or advanced microeconomics; public policy analysis (formally social policy analysis); econometrics 1 and 2 or statistics and econometrics or econometric methods for research or econometrics 1 and applied micro econometrics; public finance; public sector economics. Optional units from: advanced microeconomics; design and analysis of mechanisms and institutions; experimental economics; finance and investment; health and development; health care management; industrial economics; international macroeconomics; labour economics; project.

A range of scholarships and studentships are available at postgraduate level. Some scholarships are funded by the University (such as the York Master's Opportunity Scholarship) and some are funded by Research Councils, alumni, businesses and charities. Please check with the provider for details.
