Comparative Applied Social and Public Policy, Evaluation and Research

The course is aimed at mid-career professionals who wish to obtain overseas study and placement experience who currently work as or intend to become: policy advisors and analysts, project leaders, policy consultants, policy researchers and evaluators; the curriculum is strongly international, reflecting the research interests of staff based within SPSW (globalisation, East Asia, Asia-Pacific, and Europe); the CASPPER programme is based around a combination of comparative social policy and public management, and advanced research skills training; participants also complete a series of specialised master classes that explore issues such as research communication and systematic reviewing of evidence; students are assigned a �learning mentor� to assist in tailoring a programme of training activity to needs and begin an applied policy research placement over the summer months.

Entry requirements

Entrants to CASPPER have at least 3 years' professional experience in a public sector or NGO setting, in addition to an upper 2nd Class Honours degree or equivalent qualification; however, if students have relevant work experience with good academic potential they may also be considered.

Course modules

Modules include: Social policy analysis; comparative and international social policy research methods; globalisation and social policy; comparative social policy: governance, management and delivery; applied policy transfer project CASPPER master classes; introduction to social research methods; applied policy research placement report; advanced quantitative methods; advanced qualitative methods; placement.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on coursework and dissertation.

A range of scholarships and studentships are available at postgraduate level. Some scholarships are funded by the University (such as the York Master's Opportunity Scholarship) and some are funded by Research Councils, alumni, businesses and charities. Please check with the provider for details.
