European Gender and Equality Studies

At the University of York, students take 2 compulsory modules (difference, diversity and change; work, politics and culture) as well as a selection of research methods and optional modules. These will be agreed with the supervisor they are allocated on arrival. You will also be allocated a dissertation supervisor at York, and will complete your dissertation at York. During their mobility period/s students follow the programmes of their host universities as specified by these.

Entry requirements

Candidates are normally require to have a Bachelors degree in relevant subject to 2.1 standard or equivalent and/or relevant experience (through work; volunteering; or similar) language requirement: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent in English; AS level plus 1 additional year language training (minimum) or equivalent in French/Spanish for mobility period to any partner institution except Abo Akademi University where IIELTS 6.5 is required (classes taught in English).

Course modules

Modules include: Difference, diversity and change; quantitative methods and data analysis or qualitative methods; work politics and culture; dissertation. Optional modules include: New directions in feminist thought; gender and diasporic identities; gender violence and justice; mobility period abroad. Possibly 1 further optional module from: Feminism and sexuality; women citizenship and conflict; from body beautiful to body politic; advanced research methods.

Assessment methods

Assessment is based on written coursework; dissertation.

A range of scholarships and studentships are available at postgraduate level. Some scholarships are funded by the University (such as the York Master's Opportunity Scholarship) and some are funded by Research Councils, alumni, businesses and charities. Please check with the provider for details.
