PhD: This programme allows students to explore an area of academic interest in substantial detail. Research in the department takes place within 4 clusters: Political philosophy; comparative politics and public policy; political economy; conflict, security and development. MPhil: The degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) is awarded on the basis of a thesis submitted to the department after a minimum of 2 years' study (4 in the case of part-time students). When applying, candidates should indicate as clearly and fully as possible the nature and scope of the proposed research, outlining why they think it is both original and important. MA by Research: Applications are welcomed from candidates. When applying for the MA in Politics by Research candidates must show that they have had some prior experience in research and should indicate clearly and fully the topic of research which they wish to pursue.

Entry requirements

Good first degree in relevant subject, or directly relevant experience, preferably some experience of graduate work in the social sciences or the humanities. For applicants whose first language is not English, the minimum University English language requirements of IELTS 6.0 (with at least 5.5 in each of the four language components) or the equivalent are required.

Assessment methods

MA (by Research): The dissertation is expected to be approximately 30,000 words (and no longer than 40,000 words) in length.

Recognised by ESRC and AHRB for research studentships; University offers range of studentships and scholarships for full-time graduate students, bursaries (40% of fee) for part-time students, scholarships (on competitive basis) for overseas candidates of high academic ability, limited number of bursaries (contribution towards tuition fees) for self-financing students who meet unexpected financial problems; ESRC offers studentships.
