University of York

Biology

Students advance their knowledge or understanding of a particular aspect of the field of study. Students conduct a research project in the lab of a supervisor to produce a research thesis. An MSc by Research thesis will be narrower in scope than an MPhil thesis, although it should still contain some original work. The degree can start at any point in the year. The application procedure is similar to an MPhil and PhD, with students applying to a specific supervisor who is expert in the student's research area of interest.

Entry requirements

Applicants will normally be expected to have a good Honours degree (1st or upper 2nd Class or equivalent) in any biological subject. We will consider applicants with backgrounds in chemistry, computer science, electronics, environment, mathematics, medicine or physics who can demonstrate a commitment to the biosciences. For applicants whose first language is not English, the minimum University English language requirements of IELTS 6.0 (with at least 5.5 in each of the four language components) or the equivalent are required.
