University of York

Philosophy, Politics and Economics

As a research student within the School, you are affiliated to the department of your main supervisor, and will have access to the facilities and teaching opportunities from that department. You will usually follow a programme of study offered by your home department, in agreement with your supervisor. You will also normally (but not necessarily) have a 2nd supervisor in 1 of the other departments, depending on the interdisciplinary nature of your research. In addition, you can take modules from the other departments, as appropriate for your individual training needs and the needs of your project.

Entry requirements

To be admitted to the MPhil/PhD directly, you need a strong academic background; usually at least a 2.1 in your 1st degree and a good Master's level qualification in an appropriate discipline. If you are a non-native English speaking applicant you must provide evidence of your English language ability. You need to show enough fluency in all aspects of English (reading, writing, speaking and listening) to the required level of the course you are applying to.

Assessment methods

Dissertation length varies depending on which department the student is affiliated to. The upper word limits for each of the departments are: Economics: 50,000 words for both MPhil and PhD; philosophy: 60,000 for the MPhil and 80,000 for the PhD; politics: 70,000 words for the MPhil and 100,000 for the PhD.

Sponsorship information

A range of scholarships and studentships are available at postgraduate level. Some scholarships are funded by the University (such as the York Master's Opportunity Scholarship) and some are funded by Research Councils, alumni, businesses and charities.
