Professional Health and Social Care Studies

The programme gives health and social care professionals the chance to advance their knowledge and practice as well as grounding their learning in their own practical experiences. There is a central focus on service delivery, patient/user experience and outcome and higher level professional experience. This programme has been commended for its responsiveness to the changing needs of the health and social care sector, adapting to meet the needs of students. In this flexible modular based programme students will be able to plan their own course of study through a range of generic subjects (such as leadership), specialist clinical areas (such as cardiac and pulmonary care), as well as specialist pathways. A specialist pathway has been introduced in Housing to enable students interested in Adaptive Housing to focus their learning in this area.

Entry requirements

Applicants should normally hold hold an Honours degree or equivalent in health or social care qualifying for registration with the relevant professional body, plus experience and access to an appropriate work-related health or social care provider service. Applicants whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.

Course modules

Modules include: Evidence based practice; research methods for health and social care professionals; dissertation. Optional modules include: Support for learning in practice; teaching and education in health and social care; introduction to accessible housing; use of research methods of health professionals; evaluation of interventions for people with neurological diagnoses; modernising services for older people: the practitioner, the client and service delivery; evaluation of accessible housing and enabling environments; negotiated study; dissertation.

Assessment methods

Assessment is linked to the use of evidence and research, applied to a practice context. Each module is assessed individually, examples include practical examination, research proposal, written assignments, making presentations and leading discussions.
