Physiotherapy (pre-registration)

The aim of the programme is to train reflective, person-centred practitioners by covering the core skills within the areas of musculoskeletal cardiorespiratory and neurological physiotherapy, and integrating them within an evidence-based context. Students develop independent learning and problem solving skills using enquiry based learning. There is the opportunity to learn leadership skills and engage in service development projects. Hands on skills and clinical reasoning skills acquired in university will be developed further through a range of clinical placements.

Entry requirements

Upper 2nd Class Honours degree in a related subject from an approved university or institution. Subjects could include human biology, behavioural science, sports science, health-related profession in which the foundation sciences (human anatomy, physiology, psychology) were completed at Honours level. Insight into the physiotherapy profession is required as is evidence of academic study within the last 3 years. Students whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 7.0 (with no less than 6.5 in each individual component) or equivalent. Admission to the programme is also dependent upon a successful interview, satisfactory references, a satisfactory enhanced DBS disclosure and a satisfactory medical screening.

Course modules

Year 1: long-term conditions; physiotherapy practice; rehabilitation practice with health promotion; physiotherapy professional placements 1 and 2. Year 2: audit research and service evaluation; patient management; creative leadership and service development; physiotherapy professional practice placements 3 and 4; research in physiotherapy practice; contemporary practice; physiotherapy professional practice placement 5. Students undertake a minimum of 1000 hours of clinical education in a variety of placement settings. The programme includes 5 professional practice placements of 6 weeks each, spread over the 2-year programme. Clinical placements are assessed at undergraduate level. They are non-credit bearing modules but must be passed in order to progress.

Assessment methods

Written assignments, reports, project work, practical skills assessments, verbal presentations/vivas, poster presentations, a research proposal and research project.
