Psychology is a rich and varied discipline, and many students wish to use their MSc year to further develop and refine their interests. If you value the flexibility afforded by the opportunity to pursue your MSc studies by combining modules from our suite of cognitive, developmental, social and community psychology modules, then the MSc Psychology is for you. The programme is suitable for students who wish to use it as a stepping stone to a PhD, a professional doctorate or employment in related areas e.g. education, industry, social work, third sector, public sector.

Entry requirements

Upper 2nd Class Honours degree in Psychology or a related discipline. Applications from students whose 1st degree was not in psychology will be considered on a case-by-case basis to ensure that they have covered sufficient levels of psychology and research methods during their 1st degree. Students whose 1st language is not English require IELTS 6.5 (with no less than 6.5 in the writing component) or equivalent.

Course modules

Full-time students will take two 30-credit modules per semester, followed by a 60-credit dissertation in the spring and summer. Semester 1: Research methods, plus one from, critical social psychology; psychology of child development; everyday applications of cognitive psychology. Semester 2: Psychological Science: Perspectives and practicalities, plus one from, community psychology; principals and practice; psychology of adolescent development; applying cognitive psychology in professional contexts. Spring/summer: A dissertation module in which you can undertake and write up an extended research project (with supervision). Part-time students take 1 module in each semester in years 1 and 2, and undertake the dissertation in year 3.

Assessment methods

Assessment will take a number of different forms, including essays; project reports and an independent research project. The precise nature of assessments will depend on the modules you choose.
