Quality and Safety in Health and Social Care

Delivering high quality, safe care is at the forefront of health and social care policy in the UK, with the white paper Equity and Excellence (Liberating the NHS) stating that the governments objectives are to increase safety and improve patient experience and outcomes. This programme has been developed to support professionals working, or aspiring to work, in health and social care to deliver high quality harm free care and is in part a response to the crisis in the assurance of patient safety and quality of care. The programme refines the ability of students to critically appraise sources of evidence and judiciously synthesise information to design a tailored implementation plan for change. Content specific modules focus respectively on the related dimensions of quality and safety in practice. A secure, broad-based approach to research methodology is achieved through inter-disciplinary engagement and the programme exploits synergy between teaching and research expertise so students will be able to work on ecologically valid work-based research leading directly to improvements in care, aspiring to an academic standard fit for publication and wider dissemination.
